A little taste of an International Yam Day Potluck.
Happy Yam Day Everyone!!
A little taste of an International Yam Day Potluck.
Happy Yam Day Everyone!!
Yam Day is Tomorrow!!
My favourite part about yam day is stepping outside of your comfort zone and making something that encompasses the word ‘yamtastic.’
Here are some ideas:
- Shepard’s Pie with Yam
- Roasted Yams with Red Pepper and Rosemary
- Yam Chips
- Yam Brownies
- Yam Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Icing
- Mashed Yams with Brown Sugar and Pecan Topping
- Yam Perogies
Good luck!
….the more I find out I’m not y-alone out there.
Bruce’s Yams is a canned yam company. “Bruce’s yams are the strongest, healthiest, and tastiest veggie to ever cross a jive turkey…and got the street cred to prove it!” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jM9QJijebs&feature=player_embedded)
The blog post on their site ‘Yam-A-Pedia’ is truly inspiring!

Now, I wish I could take credit for this. This song was sent to me around the time of our first celebration of International Yam Day. The author was referring to Christmas with his/her piece but the message is one of outright praise for the Yam. This is one of the many examples of how the yam has affected us - enthusiasts are truly found worldwide!
Enjoy.
“Yam”
It’s Yam Day today
Hip hip hooray
We can celebrate Yam
And eat it with ham
The kids await their annual fete
Captain Yam with the presents come
Cos Yams makes all else second rate
So now there’s no need to be glum
A time of givin’, a time for livin’
To get away from it all
Yam Day is just that forgivin’
It can solve problems big or small
It’s Yam Day Today
Hip hip hooray
We can celebrate Yam
And eat it with ham
Yams trees pretty as they light up the city
May the happiness of Yams spread far
So it will always be a pity
Til Yams are the world’s star
They deserve so much more, for what they must endure
Cruely shunned aside by society
But soon they’ll be impossible to ignore
As they simply try to make us happy
Because…
It’s Yam Day Today
Hip hip hooray
We can celebrate Yam
And eat it with ham
Yam Day is special for every one
A time made just for having fun
So it’s Yam day for, the whole Earth
Uniting everybody for whats it worth
*EVERYBODY*
It’s Yam Day Today
Hip Hip hooray
It’s Yam Day Today
It’s Time to play
It’s Yam Day Today
Oh, hip hip hooray
We can celebrate Yam
And eat it with ham
Or maybe some jam
And possibly lamb
It’s Yam Day today
Oh, Hip Hip hooray
It’s Yam Day today
And it’s here to stay!
Treat your Yam with dignity and respect, and it will do the same to you. From http://tee-arr-eye.blogspot.com/2006/12/yam.html

To complement my last post, listen to the Vegetable song and picture these two rocking out to it.
Then picture them playing a Weird-Al influenced parody.
“Mr Tambourine Yam” by the Yim-Yam Twins. Sounds awesome, I know.
As we are on our way to Yam Day, it’s perfect timing to get excited. Thanks to a friend we even have a theme song now! Apparently the Beach Boys were forerunners on the Vegetable-Appreciation front.

This is the from our Jan 24/08 Yam Day celebration! Yam Pinata was a Yam Day hit that is still talked about today.
Applause for the beta-carotene shout out, the ‘Yummy Yam’ alliteration, and the easy recipe. The acting on the other hand…
